Senior Legacy Software Engineer / C/C++ Migration Specialist needed to migrate a complex legacy application to a modern Windows environment for the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Requires deep expertise in low-level Windows development, reverse engineering, shim/stub development, and modern C/C++ implementation. Work is almost entirely on-site in Den Helder within an isolated, secure environment.

What you'll do

Analyse how legacy Win32 code, custom drivers, and OCX components originally operated and understand dependency carry-forward
Investigate undocumented or partially documented applications without access to original source code
Identify runtime dependencies, trace system interactions, and determine legacy software communication with hardware and OS components
Use Dependency Walker, Process Monitor, and other dependency analysis and reverse engineering tools daily
Map dependencies, identify obsolete interfaces, and establish isolation or replacement without compromising functionality
Develop shim DLLs and stub components to reproduce or emulate legacy interfaces in modern environments
Implement compatibility layers that mimic obsolete driver interfaces
Implement Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) interfaces in C or C++ under architectural direction of the Lead Architect
Develop modern replacements for identified hardware calls and decouple application from legacy hardware
Perform controlled replatforming of legacy C/C++ code into a modern Windows build environment
Address deprecated API calls, resolve compatibility issues, and adapt legacy code to contemporary development toolchains
Ensure resulting implementation is maintainable, well documented, and suitable for long-term management by the Dutch Ministry of Defense
Collaborate closely with the Lead Architect and translate architectural designs into working, maintainable software components
Work almost entirely on-site at customer location in Den Helder within an isolated, secure IT environment
