Xero is seeking an Engineering Manager for its Machine Learning & AI team in Sydney, leading engineers to build and operate AI-powered products including traditional ML, generative AI, and agentic experiences. The role focuses on team growth, technical direction, delivery excellence, and production-grade AI systems, with hybrid working available.

What you'll do

Lead a high-performing, inclusive team of engineers building and operating AI-powered experiences and capabilities across Xero
Lead engineering across customer-facing AI experiences, intelligent product workflows, backend services, platforms and infrastructure
Turn research, models and emerging AI capabilities into reliable, secure and scalable production products
Balance predictable delivery with engineering quality and system health, building maturity across MLOps, LLMOps, observability, evaluation and operational practices
Champion AI-native engineering practices and help the team adapt how software is designed, built, tested and operated
Work closely with senior individual contributors, including staff and principal engineers, to shape technical direction
Focus on team growth, delivery excellence and sustainable engineering practices
Translate business goals into executable engineering plans, balancing near-term delivery with long-term technical health
Stay hands-on when needed, writing, reviewing or debugging production code to unblock the team or resolve complex technical challenges
