Perception Engineer

Brumby is hiring a Perception Engineer to build onboard perception systems for autonomous cattle-herding drones. The role involves training and deploying models on Jetson edge hardware, sensor fusion with camera and GNSS/IMU, and field deployments to cattle stations. Based in Sydney with hybrid work and full Australian working rights required.

What you'll do

Build perception systems that let drones find, count, and track cattle from the air
Train models that work in challenging real-world conditions
Use GNSS to georeference detections so every animal is correctly located
Help the drone read the land, including checking fence lines, water troughs, and pasture conditions
Take models from messy, real-world flight footage through to fast, reliable inference on a Jetson
Go out on stations to see how models hold up in the field and bring data back to improve them
Work closely with the autonomy team so perception translates into flight behavior
Develop onboard perception that detects, counts, and tracks cattle day and night
Build edge inference pipelines on Jetson that run in real time with no connectivity
Fuse camera, thermal, and GNSS/IMU data to geo-locate every animal in the paddock
Work on the interface between perception and autonomy
Develop simulation and replay tooling to test the full loop before field deployment
